Mindful Dialogue: Integrating the Personal and Transpersonal Aspects of the Self
What is Zen Dialogue?
Zen Dialogue is in many ways a synthesis of Zen and Mindfulness meditation traditions & Western psychology. It helps one deal with both the personal and the transpersonal aspects of the Self and assists in integration of both.
Zen Dialogue embodies an understanding of related methods rooted in traditions of Western psychological techniques such as IFS and Voice Dialogue by identifying and communicating with inner voices or parts. However, it adds a unique contribution of insights and approaches from Mindfulness and Buddhist Psychology.
Zen Dialogue is based on working with the controlling part of the ego instead of doing an end run around it. Some spiritual disciplines treat the ego as something to be overcome or done away with, but Zen Dialogue emphasizes respect for the ego and how it impacts oneâs life. It also helps uncover unconscious aspects or âvoicesâ that sabotage us and get in the way of healthy functioning.
Zen Dialogue can help give voice to parts of ourselves that are unconscious or disowned as well as those which are conscious or owned. Unconscious parts are discovered through a carefully facilitated and directed process of inner inquiry that can lead to a renewed sense of joy and satisfaction with life, as well as a renewed sense of purpose. It can help us get in better touch with our own spirituality and psychological health, regardless of our beliefs or the tradition we practice. Sessions can be conducted in person or via Zoom.

Zen Dialogue Featured in MysticMag
The core principle of Zen Dialogue is the recognition that we are not monolithic beings but rather collectives of different parts within ourselves. Some of these parts are conscious and aware, while others are subconscious or unconscious. These parts influence our behaviors and our state of mind at any given moment. Zen Dialogue facilitation helps us connect with these unfamiliar or not clearly understood parts of ourselves and integrate them into a more conscious ego structure.

How Do I Become A Facilitator of Zen Dialogue?
Those who have trained to be facilitators in the Zen Dialogue Method include nurses, psychologists, teachers, counselors and religious leaders. Many have found it an invaluable tool in working with clients, patients or group members in deepening their understanding of their practice and life.
If you wish to take the training, you must first attend a weekend Zen Dialogue Retreat. During that time, youâll receive a good understanding in how the technique works in a group setting. Then, youâll need to experience between 2 to 4 individual sessions with a certified facilitator. The individual sessions can be done before a group retreat also. After completing these prerequisites, you can apply to the training program.
